Abstract

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this research is to study the people’s behaviour of belief in Sangsilapajai literary works, It is the belief in Buddhism with regard to the action, the merit, the sing, the hell, and the heaven by interviewing 50 old persons, who are both the works and the laymen, and 250 high school students in the 4 – 6 grades. The following important points are found in this research.

It was found that the belief in action and the result of action had already appeared in the societies. The belief in action and the result of action found in Sangsilapajai supported the original one to be clearer, stronger, and more powerful. There were 86.64 percent of the believers and 13.36 percent of the unbelievers.

It was found that the mentioned merit did not refer to offering the charity, observing the precepts, and developing the meditation, but really to listening to the story of Sangsilapajai or showing the story of Sangsilapajai such as a Sangsilapajai singer and dancer etc. Here, there were  90.00 percent of the believers and 10.00 percent of the unbelievers.

Regarding the belief in the sins, It is found that most of the people recognized  Kumbhan Giant as an agent of the sins or the sin action, and as a symbol to cause the people to be more fearful for the sins than the other characters action. About this point, there were 89.14 percent of the believers and 10.86 of the unbelievers.

Regarding the belief in the hell, It is found that the Sangsilapaj Literary Works mentioned very little about it. However, an image of an event or a scene in the story was frightfully represented by speaking about the most frightful hell called Aveci. Here, 81.8 percent of the people believed it and 18.2 percent of them did not believe it.

Regarding the belief in the heaven, It is found that in Sangsilapajai Literary Works,  the hell is mentioned very little. However, when the characters spoke about the heaven, they caused  the readers or audiences to agree with it and to wish to go to the heaven with the characters. In this point, there were 89.22 percent of the believers and 10.78 percent of the unbelievers.
