Abstract

ABSTRACT

This was a survey research conducted with the following objectives : 1) to study the effectiveness of learning Language and Communication  by Problem-Based Learning/PBL, and 2) to study the satisfactions of students with learning and teaching  Language and Communication  by Problem-Based Learning/PBL.

      The research results are

                  1. From the analysis of the efficiency of lesson plan of Language and Communication learning by Problem-Based Learning, it was found that students’ mean scores from the formative evaluation of work behaviour according to the lesson plan of  the Language and Communication Learning by Problem-Based Learning/PBL are equal to 84.00 percent with standard deviation of 5.11 which is 86.00 percent of 100 scores.

                  2. For the achievements of Language and communication learning by Problem-Based Learning, it was found that the mean scores of the achievement test before learning are equal to 20.20 with standard deviation of 3.80 which is 67.33 percent of 30 scores and the mean scores of learning achievement after learning is equal to 25.67 with standard deviation of 1.93 which is 85.56 percent of 30 scores.

                  3. It was found that the mean values of 20.20 of pre-test with standard deviation value of 3.80 and those of 25.67 of post-test with standard deviation value of 1.93 were found to be significantly different at .05 levels. This indicated that the efficiency of the learning of “Language and Communication” by Problem-Based Learning after learning was higher than the efficiency before learning.

                  4. It was found that the mean scores of 10 lesson plans on learning with “Language and Communication” by Problem-Based Learning were equal to 69.10 which was 69.10 percent of 100 scores and the mean value of the post-test was equal to 25.67 which was 85.56 of 100 scores. Thus, the efficiency of the first year students’ learning with “Language and Communication by Problem-Based Learning” was equal to 69.10 / 85.56 which was in accordance with the set criterion.

                  5. The satisfactions of students with learning and teaching with “language and communication” were as follow:

                  1) The satisfactions of students with learning and teaching management by  problem-based learning were in high level, and their satisfactions with each item were also in high level with the mean value of 3.89.

                     2) The satisfactions of students with learning and teaching management by Problem-Based Learning in the aspect of lecturers evaluation were in high level with the mean value of 3.88 and  each item of this aspect was also in high level.
