Abstract.
The Thesis on " The Results of Mental Development for the end of Life Patients in the Buddhist Way : A case Study of the Palliative Care program in Thayang Hospital of Phetchaburi Province”. It is a quasi-Experimental and qualitative research in nature. The objectives of the study are: (1) to study Buddhadhamma and the series of activities based in the Buddhist way related to the life and death in Theravada Buddhism; (2) to present the model of the mental development for the end of Life Patients based in the Buddhist way; and (3) to study the results of the mental development for the end of Life Patients based in the Buddhist way to help them get relieve from suffering. The population and sample of the study are the patients in the palliative care program in Thayang Hospital of Phetchaburi Province, who are full of consciousness and still able to do various activities based in the Buddhist way. The sample includes 10 patients. The tool of data collection are a questionnaire and structured Interview. The questionnaire contains four parts: the basic information, feeling assessment of the mind, understanding (cognitive),and social and environmental awareness of palliative patients with 12 questions. 15 questions of the assessment of spiritual well-being of patients according to the Buddhist way. The structured Interview contains the assessment of spiritual well-being of patients according to the Buddhist way and the series of activities for the mental development of patients according to the Buddhist which have been constructed by the study from documents, texts and research works related to the mental development of patients. The statistics used for analyzing data includes descriptive statistics, percentage, mean and standard deviation to describe general information. Both before and after having used series of activities Paired test Statistics Paired test has been also used for comparatively analyzing experimental results using a set of activities for the mental development of palliative patients according to the Buddhist way.
The results of the study are as follows.
When comparing the average grade before and after testing using a set of activities for the mental development of palliative patients according to the Buddhist way it was found to get a statistically significant difference at 0.01 after 7 days. Regarding the feeling of the mind it is found to be significantly improved at 0.00. With regards understanding (wisdom) it was found to be significantly improved at 0.01, and the spiritual well-being has been also significantly improved at 0.01. Whereas regarding the social and environmental perception it was found not to be significantly different
With regards to the interviews of the spiritual well-being of palliative patients and the observation of the patients together with their expression and sight patients it was found that the majority of patients were not afraid of death. Prayers helped them feel relieved with a bright face and without any concerns of their children and no irrigation. To slightly chanting the word ‘Bhavana Buddho’ made them feel relaxed and decrease pain and help them more concentration. Talking about charity ever made and a desire to make a for good merit helped them be happy. More willing to make merits, offer monks presents, be concentrated on prayers and compassionate brought about them the happiness. To commemorate the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha brought them physical and mental happiness, which displayed patients’ faith in the Triple Gem in palliative care program in Thayang Hospital of Phetchaburi Province. |
