Abstract

                  The main purposes of this study were: (1) to study the I-san people’s belief in the Pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies, (2) to study the people’s belif in the Pu-ta-worshipping ceremonies at BanNongvansokphra and BanNongvangkhotara, Nongvangsokphra sub-district, Pol district, Pol district, Khonkaen province, and (3) to compare the value of the people’s belif in the Pu-ta-worshipping ceremonies at BanNongvansokphra and BanNongvangkotara, BanNongvansokphra, BanNongvangsokphra sub-district, Pol district,Khonkaen province. This was a qualitative reseaech to collect all data from the in-depth interview. The sample was people in BanNongvansokphraand BanNongvanghotara, BanNongvangsokphra sub-district, Pol district, Khaonkaen province. There was the descriptive analysis according to the inductive method.

                 A result of this study was found that the I-san people’s belief in Pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies was still alive because people required the forest and nature for their lives and agiculture such as farming, gardening, and herding. Because the climate in some year was impossible for planting and there was some drought, people were afraid of the mysteriously natural power and then, they believed in ghosts, heaven beings. They came together to worship those beings for good protection and safety. Thus, the I-sna people had the ceremony of worshiping Pu-ta, an ancestral spirit.

                 The value of the people’s belief in the Pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies at BanNongvansokphra and BanNongvangkhotaranwas found in five aspects.

                 1.Indivdual value was seen in the Pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies to people feel stable, safe, relieved, and careful in following the communal Hit and Kong because they were afraid of Pu-ta’s power.

                 2. The family value was found in the pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies to make all members of family harmonious, able to keep the ceremony of worshiping the ancestral ghosts, and honest and respectable to the old person. The Pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies wrer really the center of public mind and the stability of families.

                 3. Social value in the Pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies caused the basic Belief in a way of life among people in the community, social harmony, harmony, and unanimity to decrease a number of problems.

                 4. Economical value in the Pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies dealt with the great effect on the individual mind and a way of individual life according to Hit and Kong as a way of life in the I-san communities. It gave people the mental shelter, safety, happiness, and rapture to work in daily life . Moreover,

                 The Pu-ta-worshiping ceremonies caused the social rules to make society happy, peaceful, harmonious, unanimous, cooperative. These results had also the great effect on the communal economics.

                 5. The Buddhist value in the Pu-ta-Worshiping ceremonies caused the good effect on Buddhism. The Pu–ta-worshiping ceremonies helped monks and the temple to hold its own duty as a meritoriours bridge to connect human beings with ghosts or the ancestral spirits. They made Buddhism stable and central of public mind about safety and happiness.
