A Comparative Study of Techniques Perceived in the Theravada Buddhism and Confucianism

Abstract

ABSTRACT

The research is of 3 objectives namely :-  1) to study the manner of teaching of Buddha,  2) to study the method of teaching of Confucius,  and 3) to compare the method of teaching of the Buddha and the Confucius. This research is the comparative study by the documentary data.

From the study, it is found that:-

In the perspective of Theravada Buddhism is the principle of Buddha’ teaching who is a preacher giving a sermon to people, He establish in Himself, e.g., 1) his instruction or exposition, 2) it has reasoning or refers to causality, 3) it is inspired by kindness, 4) it is not for worldly gain, and 5) it does not hurt oneself or others. He will teach according to the listener’s intelligence by the conversation or discuss. He use for the one who is not believe with the explanation, He preach the Dhamma in daily life by the question and answer, there are many person doubt in Dhamma, need to know the doctrines, ask for comparing with their sect’s doctrines, and lay down the regulations.

The researcher has found out many methods in the perspective of Confucianism. Each method is upon the situation at that time. Because Confucius emphasis on situations happening and know accordingly the principles and method of teaching. The researcher has found that the method of Confucius’s teachings can be concluded in four methods by the conversations, teaching by reproduced situation or explanation, question and answer, teaching by experiment or comparison.

 Even though both Theravada Buddhism and Confucianism is a small difference of the method of teaching, but they hold the listeners are as the center and teach Dhamma according to their temperaments.
