Abstract

 The aim of this thesis is to attempt an analytical study of the

goal of Buddhism, the cessation of dukkha.

The present work is a textual study, which begins with an

exploration and examination of the background and concept of the term

Dhamma, including the pre-Buddhist period and its usage on the part of

wanderers contemporary with the Buddha. The term Dhamma is a

profound term, having many different connotations, depending upon the

context in which it is encountered. For instance, the term is used to refer

to nature, natural law, as well as the Buddha’s teachings, and the various

practices that lead to nibbāna. Finally, we examine the
