Abstract

Abstract

The research entitled “A Study of the Leadership of Phratepkosol (Sangwal Brammavaṇṇo)” consists of two objectives: 1) to study the leadership in line with Buddhism, 2) to study the leadership of Venerable Phratepkosol (Sangwal Brammavaṇṇo) and 3) to analyze his leadership in the frame of six missions towards the society and the Sangha development in Chiang Mai. The results were found that:

Leaders and administrators with knowledge, marketability and asking other to follow are “one with leadership”. According to Buddhism, the leaders are endowed with interior and exterior qualifications, that is, they should have good vision, well-experienced, good characteristics and integrating Buddha-dhamma for the best. The Buddha-dhammas are 3-Adhipateyya: dominant influence; understanding administration for organization and community, 4-Brahmavihara: holy abidings; understanding the high and low states of mind, 4-Sangahavatthu: bases of sympathy; understanding friendship building, 5-Bala: the strengths; understanding the good administration intellectually and emotionally. The other Buddha-dhammas supporting the leadership also are: 6-Sārāniyadhamma: states of conciliation; knowing self-administration and work-administration together, 6-Disā: directions; knowing roles and duty towards the society, 7-Aparihāniyadhamma: conditions of welfare; knowing work-administration efficiently by realizing organization benefit, and 7-Sappurisadhamma: quality of a good man; knowing the interior and exterior administration properly. Besides, the other Buddha-dhammas interrupting the leadership are: Akusala-mūla: roots of bad actions; thought against good action, Attādhipateyya: using self-dependence, and Agati: putting wrong course of behavior.

In case of Venerable Phratepkosol (Sangwal Brammavanno)’s leadership, he could apply some of the Buddha-dhammas for his administration; using 3-Adhipateyya and 4-Brahmavihara for his administrative affairs,  4-Sangahavatthu for education welfare, social welfare and public welfare, 5-Bala  for academic affairs and propagation activities. In addition, he took some of the Buddha-dhammas for his leadership. They are: 6-Sārāniyadhamma for equal management of the organization, 6-Disā for general administration, education and propagation, 7-Aparihāniyadhamma for people management and financial management, and 7-Sappurisadhamma for integration of knowledge and potentiality for the organization benefit.

At last, it can be found that Venerable Phratepkosol’s leadership is high and outstanding for the society and the Sangha development in Chaing Mai. His leadership can clearly be classified into three points: 1) the external objects: assisting many temples, 2) the mentality: cultivating moral and ethics for Buddhists, and 3) the social activity: attending the Sangha meeting and taking lay people assistance for good. He is worshiped and respected by all walks of Buddhists. The important factor for his notable leadership is that he is “one with good knowledge and moral” and also took a position of the Chaing Mai ecclesiastical governor.
