Abstract

The research on ‘An analysis of the result of the past karma from killing in Theravada Buddhist texts’ had three purposes; first was to study on killing in Theravada Buddhist text, second was to study the results of the past karma from killing in Theravada Buddhist text and final was to analyze results of the past karma from killing in Theravada Buddhist text.

This research was documentary research by studying from primary source which was Tipitaka along with secondary sources which were commentary, books, documents and related researches then analyzed in form of descriptive research.

The results revealed that:

1. The word “Panãtibãtã” came from Pali language’s word which mean killing. Killing in Tipitaka generallymentioned the bad result for doer both in this life and next life.Itwas taught to be avoid but did not mention in detail. In Mangkalatthadipani, the commentary text, it shown the key elements of killing’s process was intent of killer. The killing’s process has two kinds; one was killing by oneself and another was killing by asking others to do it instead of oneself.  There were five sorts of judging the action as killing: 1) that animal alive, 2) knowing that animal alive, 3) intent to kill, 4) attempt to kill and 5) that animal has died from that intent.

2.The word ‘Puppakamma’ means past karma or last life’s karma which mean both good and bad actions but the past karma from killing only means to bad action. In Tipitaka, they referred to the results of karma or Vipakawhich was classified by time: 1) at the presentlife 2) in the next life and 3) in the following life. But in the commentary textsin the lather time such as Manorathapurani, itexplained the effect of karma as it was 12 types. In the commentary of Thammapada,it shown some examples of the resultof karma from killing such as the results ofkarma from killing of Jundha, the pig slaughtererat the present life, the results of karma from killing of female demon name Kali and a daughter of rich family in Sawatthicity in the next life and in the following life. Even in Thailand also there weremany books on the results of the past karma from killing which are available until today.

3. Learning and understanding the results of the past karma of killing aimed to make people understand the process and elements of killing, respecting other’s life, realizing the bad results of infringement of Sila. In the past, Thai society clearly mentions on the bad results of the results of Sila’s infringement bystudying from the case study of people who get the result ofthe past karma from killing from past to present which had confirmed the Karma principle. Solving Panatibat’s problem in Thai society must required cooperation from all parts of society which were communities, temples and government services to indicate the bad results of killing and pointing out the benefits of avoiding killing by supporting people to follow Sila and adhere to compassionate principle.
