AStudy on the Benefits and Values of Vedanã Based on the Four Foundation of Mindfulness

Abstract

This research is of 3 objectives: 1) to study Vedanã (sensation) in Theravada Buddhist Texts 2) to studythe principles and methods of mindfulness in Vedanã according to 4 Foundations of Mindfulness and 3) to studythe benefits and values ​​of Vedanã in the Insight Meditation practice and the life living. It is a documentary research supplemented with in-depth interview. The results are found that :

Vedanã means the feeling of happiness, suffering or equanimity. The sensational mindfulness is focusing to see the empirical truth such as pain and sore, etc.; to see the truth according to the Three Characteristics; impermanence, suffering and Selflessness for attainment the escape from suffering: Nibbana.

Duce to Vadanã is the physically and mentally emotional feeling, the methods of sensational mindfulness practice are different in details. The three Meditation Centers such as Wat Rampoeng, Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong, and Tanang Lenang Dharma Practice Center have followed the methods of practice as appeared in Pali Commentaries.  Some differences in technique are found in these three places. But the Sri Manta Meditation Center having practice Vedanãnupassanãasa combination of all Dharma (Kãyajitta and Dhamma). There fore it is emphasizing on both respectively and reversely sensational mindfulness meditation. This is considered as the heart technique of this place.

The benefits of Vedanãnupassanã is the progress of the practical indicator. Because it appears clearly in all times while practice. It is also a tool of the physical and mental healthdevelopment, the quality of learning, quality of life and social. It is a device for controlling emotions. It set the neutralized mind. That is, it does not rise or down when having affected by emotions whether being good or bad, happy or suffering, likes or dislikes. The value of Vedanãnupassanã is the life support to live mindfully. It is the happier life and the less suffering life. It sets the harmonious and balancedlife.
