A Model of Transformational Administration of Monks in Sangha Administration Region (Buddhist Educational Administration)

Abstract

The objectives of this inter-disciplinary research were; 1) to study the administrative conditions of monks in the Sangha Administration Region 1, 2) to develop a model of transformational management of monks in the Sangha Administration Region 1, and 3) to propose the transformational administration model of the monks in the Sangha Administration Region 1. The quantitative data were collected from 351 administrative monks through questionnaires and analyzed by mean and standard deviation. The qualitative data were obtained from a seminar with 11 experts and focus group discussions with 8 experts to examine the suitability of the model. The data were analyzed by content analysis.

The research revealed that:

1.  The administrative condition of the monks in the Sangha Administration Region 1 was at a moderate level totally. In details, the highest level was on  supervision, followed by personnel, organization management, planning and administration respectively.

2.  The transformational management model of the monks in the Sangha Administration Region 1 consists of 4 elements: 1. Principle of developing the capacity of monks with knowledge and behaviors to create faith and create identity in the changing society, 2. Objective to develop monks and organization of the Sangha in the scope of Dhamma and Vinaya principles, laws and Sangha regulations to keep up with the rapidly changing environment, 3. Component; 1) Sangha administration, 2) Transformational Management, 3) Buddhist Principles, and 4. Administrative Process; planning, organization management, personnel, administration, and supervision, 2) Transformation management; structural change, human resource change, organization cultural change, and technological change, and 3)  The Buddhist principle supporting the transformational management is Papanikadhamma;  1) shrewd, 2) capable of administering business, and  3) having a good credit rating.

3.  The experts examined and approved the transformational administration model of monks in the Sangha Administration Region 1 that it was appropriate and applicable the present Sangha organization in the scope of Dhamma and Vinaya principles.
