The Study of Layman Enlightenment in Buddhist Scriptures

Abstract

This study is documentary research and the objectives of this research as follows: (1) to study the layman of enlightenment in Tipitaka, (2) to study the principles of Dhamma effecting to layman enlightenment in the Tipitaka, and    3) to analyze the enlightenment of layman in Tipitaka.

 

   The study found that enlightenment is the ultimate goal of Buddhism for appreciating Nibbana. There are many synonyms of Pãlî words such as Pativedha, Adhigavo, Patti, Abhisamayo, Sacchikiriyã, Ñãñadassana and Vimokkha. In Thai language means appreciating to sublime state (Ariya) that can be divided into 4 levels, namely Sotāpanna, Sakadāgāmî, Anāgāmî and Arahan. The state of enlightenment can be classified into 3 aspects, including wisdom state, mental state and behavior state or way of life that will be different from common people. The layman who enlightened in Tipitaka there were a lot and honored as Buddhist monks who enlightened. Because there is the same criterion of enlightenment, including the abandonment of 10 items in Samyojana. For the principles that effect to the layman enlightenment, basically, Anupubbikathã, Four Noble Truths. At the higher level, The Buddha will deliver a sermon according to manners of each one such as Samkhãrakathã, abandoning eroticism the word about abandoning sensuality and Indriyasamvara etc.

 

             The enlightenment of layman in Tipitaka reveals that the preaching of Buddha that is complete with science, including knowledge and art, including Dhamma techniques. That can be divided into 2 kinds, namely the basic principles refer to the principles of those who enlighten, most of them listen too and that is normal for the Buddha to show this principle, including Anupubbikathã and Four Noble Truths that is the method of teaching in form of Anusãsanî-pãtihãriya, including to show Dhamma respectively. And special principles those can make advanced enlightenment that Buddha chose to show his Dhamma teaching for preaching to individual according to manners of each one for enlightenment in network of wisdom.

 

   For the status of layman who enlighten reveal that Buddhism called the accomplished person that noble person. For layman, even if they enlighten, they have to live, run a business according to layman, but there are ways of living that raises from ordinary person because of the ability to discard Samyojana as they attained that distinguished Dhamma is the stability of the Triple Gem, the Virtue, the concentration and the wisdom, except at the level of Buddhist Saint that has to be ordained or Nibbana on that day and next world of Buddhist Saint would not appear.

 

   The practicing guidelines of layman for enlightening, including self-practice according to the principles of threefold training, namely Adhisîla-sikkhã, Adhicitta-sikkhã and Adhipaññã-sikkhã. By the way, that is to follow the 5 steps of Anupubbikathã, including Dãnakathã, Sîlakathã, Saggakathã, Kãmãdînavakathã and Nekkhammakathã
