Abstract

This research work composed of three objectives : (1) to study the history and content of the Jinakālamālipakarana (2) to study the Lanna Buddhist Arts in Jinakālamālipakarana; and (3) to analyse the Lanna Buddhist arts in Jinakālamālipakarana. This research is a qualitative research based on a documents.

The Jinakālamālipakarana is the Buddhist Pali literature composed by Ven. Phra Rattanapanya  Thera between B.E 2060 - 2071 in Lanna Kingdom of Lanna. The contents of Jinakālamālipakarana  is the story of Lord Buddha since the starting from the time of his will to be the next Buddha, while he was the Sumedha Risi, having forecasted to be the next Buddha from the Dipankara Buddha. Then, he has fulfilled the Perfections through the times of 24 Buddhas in the past.   The last birth, the Bodhisattva was born in the Sakaya Dynasty Gotama Clane named as  Sakyamuni, latter on renounced the world became the Hermit. Finally he attained the enlightenment, taught for 45 years. At the age of 80, he passed away.

The Buddhist Art of Lanna as found in Jinakālamālipakarana   are classified into 3 types : 1) the art of sculpture, it is an expression of sculpture, engraving, casting and other beauty compositions on various media. The making a Buddha image with many material such as wood.

On the Architecture type, It is a work of art expressing the construction of Buildings  including the environment both inside and outside the land scape. The Himayalan wildlives were used as a component of the sacred monumental with the symbolic meaning.

On the Handicrafts type,  They are many such as the image of the Buddha in the Clothe, the flower plates, the triple gem’s bowls, the glasses, the hanging light, the high altars, the royal garments the preaching seat for monks, and many styles of Tungs, Bouquet of Bee.    

In analyzing on the value of the Lanna Buddhist arts, which appeared in the Jinakālamālipakarana. It reflects the values ​​and the principles to develop the virtues of person to be complete in terms of moral behavior, psychological, intellectual and social.

In the value of faith it is show the strong belief in Phra Rattana Patima, the Buddha statue which is in measurable power. It was followed since the time of Kinkg Saen Muangma brought the Buddha from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai, then, the tradition of worship the Buddha’s relics, the pagodas and so on, has handed down to the present day such as the tradition of worship Phra Singhala, the tradition of coping the pagoda with a gold plate in Wat Luang Hariphunjaya.

In the historical value, it told the story of Haripunchai City, the story of Phra Nang Jamma Devi, the story of the King Mang Rai’s building up Lanna Kingdom, and the story of the Buddhist Council in Lanna. All the above mentions have shown the values those derived from the Lanna Buddhist Arts as Jinakālamālipakarana.
