Abstract

The thesis entitled ‘A Study of the Development of Meditation Center According to Sappàya in Buddhism at Wat San Kang Pla in Sankamphaeng District, Chiang Mai Province’ is of three objectives: 1) to study concept and principles of beneficial condition in Buddhism, 2) to study concept which related to the development of efficiency and management of Meditation Centre in Thailand and   3) to analyze the development of meditation center based on the Buddhist principles of beneficial condition at Wat San Kang Pla.

The results revealed that the term ‘Sappàya’ refers to things favorable to mental development both physical and mental comfort in order to develop themselves until reaching Nibbàna: the Unconditioned State. The Sappàya consists of seven beneficial conditions as follows: - suitable abode, suitable resort, suitable speech, suitable person, suitable food, suitable climate and suitable posture.

 

Regarding the concept related to development of efficiency and management of the Meditation Centre in Thailand, it was found that the meditation centers in Thailand have a clean, shady and beautiful environment. Management and various development strategies are used in the meditation centers. It is a task that requires a lot of intelligent techniques and methods in management, such as leadership knowledge, personnel related to the center who have qualifications both in scripture studies and practice experiences.  

An analysis result of the development of the Wat San Kang Pla’s meditation center based on the principles of beneficial condition, it was found that Wat San Kang Pla has the appropriate states of development based on the seven principles of beneficial conditions viz. 1) suitable abode, 2) suitable resort, 3) suitable speech, 4) suitable person, 5) suitable food, 6) suitable climate and 7) suitable posture. In addition, it was also found Wat San Kan Pla has set the curriculum and training process for those who come to practice meditation until they can get the most benefit from the practice. Moreover, the temple has a clear policy of developing in order to be the perfect meditation center.
