Belief and Rituals Towards Bungfai Tradition of the Banthard Community , Banthard Sub-district, Phen District, Udonthani Province

Abstract

The purposes of this research were; 1) to study the beliefs and rituals in Buddhism 2) to study the beliefs and therituals towards Bungfai Tradition of Bantard community, Banthard Sub-district, Phen District, Udonthani Province and 3) to study the value of Bungfai tradition towards the lives of Banthrad Community, Banthard Sub-district, Udonthani Province. This research was the qualitative research by using the method of purposive sampling and using the in-depth interview. The 25 key informants consisted of Buddhist monks, village chiefs and communal leaders and people in Banthard Sub-district, Phen District, Undonthani Province in order to receive the empirical data in accordance with the qualitative research design.

      The results of the research were found that for the concept related to the Buddhist beliefs and rituals, the majority of Buddhists still believe in various rituals and worship the sacred things or temples including the auspicious materials by believing that all these materials must create the spiritual strength and these things will result in the auspiciousness for their lives and the results that result from their practice will impact on themselves. Belief and rituals towards the Bungfai tradition of Banthard community, Banthard Sub-district, Phen District, Udonthani Province result from the beliefs and the rituals towards the Bungfai tradition in order to worship Phrasrimahathard and worship Poomakamlai by making a vow for the happiness of the community and their families. When they complete their wishes, they will put                  fire on Bungfai in order to worship Phrasrimahathard or some believe that to worship PayaThaenwill cause the rainy season in those communities and will create the value of the Bungfai tradition for their lives of Banthard community, Banthard Sub-district, Pen District, Udonthani Province in 5 aspects, that is, 1) In the spiritual aspect, it is the spiritual value of Banthard Community by believing that they believe that to put fire on Bungfai in order to worship the sacred things will protect all those areas for their own relief and happiness not to cause the peril or the sickness in that community, 2) In economic aspect, the present Bungfai tradition is the annual festival supported by the officials in order encourage the tourists from various places to participating                in Bungfai festival and then to enhance the tourism to join in the tradition ceremony also in order to create the incomes in the community as well 3) in social aspect, if any person does not practice the frame of tradition, he will not be accepted by people                   in the community. This is to preserve the tradition. That person will be considered as bad person or as wrong doer in his tradition also 4) in local political aspect, people                in the community and general people who come to participate in the festival practice themselves in the regulations. So it is certain that there will have the safety and          people who come to join the activity will have fun and impression in participation                              of Bungfai festival and 5) in the aspect of the traditional and cultural inheritance,                 the Bungfai traditions has the influence, that is, it causes Banthard villagers to have fun and preference of donation and it reflects the  culture and belief of E-san people who still pay respect to oral tradition from one generation to another generation until it becomes the tradition .

      The primitive Bungfain tradition encourages the offspring to protect it as the local wisdom or sound strategy of the ancestors or the primitive communal leaders who unite the communal energy and take the offspring to go the temple to make merit. It is considered that the ancestors or communal leaders are intelligent and to be able to advice their offspring to do good with doing the various activities together.
