Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1) to study the concepts of harmony in Buddhism; 2) to study the principles of harmony in Buddhism; 3) to apply the dhamma principles of harmony in Buddhism. This study was conducted by the documentary research collecting the data from the Tipiaka, books, documents and relevant research. The research results were as follows:

The concepts of the harmony principles in Buddhism are related to the harmony in three characteristics: Sangharājī (dissolution of the group); Sanghabheda (divisions of monks) and Sanghasāmaggī (harmony of monks) that refer to the physical, vocal and mental conducts composed of loving kindness (mettā) among the friends and people in the society. Harmony is an expression of cohesion to perform the task efficiently with mutual sympathy and unity which will create love and harmony and ability to perform works successfully.

To create the harmony in the society by using the dhamma principles of the rapport or harmony such as the bases of social solidarity (sagahavatthu), states of conciliation (sāraīyadhamma) and the condition of welfare (aparihāniyadhamma) is the behavioral base of oneself and society to build the mutual relationship, love and respect, harmony and single mind.

The application of dhamma to promote the harmony in Buddhism is to ask every party to complete their duties with carelessness against the defilement or desire. When everyone, every department and every faculty in the society has no conflict, there is only harmony. The practice of the dhamma principles to be applied as a way of living together will help to make Thai society home, community, society and nation peaceful and livable. This is the result of harmony.
