A Development of the Theravada Buddhist Good Governance Indicator for Monastery Administration

Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1) to study the monastery management in the current time; 2) to study the components of the good governance indicators in Theravada Buddhism for the monastery management; 3) to develop the good governance indicators in Theravada Buddhism for the monastery management. This study was the qualitative research conducted through the interview of the samples under the governance of Nakhonratchasima Province Sangha Administrative Region ô.

      The research results were as follows:

1) The current monastery management, besides relying on the principles of the dhamma discipline, must be remained within the legal framework and traditions of Thai society with the abbot as the legal monastery administrator and a monastery committee as the assistance in the administration. The mission of the monastery is different from the past as there was has only administrative and religious affairs. At present, the temple has to carry out six missions including administrative work, propagation work, religious education, public utilities work, welfare education and public welfare work.

2) According to the results of the study of good governance components in Theravada Buddhism for monastery management, it was found that the administrative work consists of 18 elements, the propagation work has 12 elements, the religious education has 13 elements, the public utility work has 13 elements, the welfare work consists of 12 elements, and the public welfare work has 13 elements.

      3) As the results of the development of good governance indicators in Theravada Buddhism for monastery management, 30 indicators of the administrative work, 30 indicators of the propagation work, 30 indicators of the religious education, 30 indicators of the public utility work, 30 indicators of welfare work, and 30 indicators of public welfare work have been developed.
