A Comparative Study of the Wise (Pandita) in the Theravada Buddhism and Confucianism

Abstract

The objective of the thesis is to study the concept and the theories of the Pandita, the development process to be the Pandita and the roles and the integrity of the Pandita in Theravada Buddhism and Confucianism.

This thesis is a documentary study from the study; it is found that Pandita in the Buddhist doctrines means a person who lives with wisdom. The Pandita achieves the benefits in this life and the benefits in the next life. The Pandita has  characteristics of the  normally well  thinking, talking and doing. Pandita  is a good person who knows about evil or goodness. Pandita can widely build  the good way to the societies and the country. Pandita  can be separated  into  two  type  they  are at the  material  level  and the supramundane level. The ways to be the Pandita  are to practice the Eightfold Noble  Path  in  Buddhism  and to  practice the Threefold Training:- Adhisila-sikkha, Adhicitta-sikkha and Adhipaññā-sikkha melding Sappurisa-Dhamma of seven virtues of the righteous person in the self-developing. The Pandita’s duty is to have virtue different from that of the general people such virtues are the discipline, compassion, justice, and mercy, and gratitude. Pandita  has the  sense  of  wisdom  in  the  way  of  reigning  themselves,  the  human beings  and  work. The Knowledge from analytically studying to be a Pandita in Theravada Buddhism is the application and integration of the morality in thinking, talking and doing with various organizations to apply the moral principles to be in conjunction with knowledge of their professions. The virtue is to determine whether it should be done or not. this shows that the Panditas are entirely different from other people in thinking, talking and doing.

In conclusion,  the person who  is  the Pandita in Theravada  Buddhism  has the wisdom and good  behavior in the Buddha’s teaching of  Buddhism. The Buddha taught the  Buddhists  to  know  the excellent  doctrines in  the way of  practice  and  the way to live in  the societies with happiness. So, at the present time, the societies need the  person who is of good thinking, talking and doing to be the leader of societies and to help the country to be more  progressive.
