Abstract

This thesis is aimed to study the marriage ritual belief of Akha and Lanna Buddhists. It is on the purpose to study and to compare between Akha’s marriage ritual belief and Lanna Buddhists’ marriage ritual belief by using quantitative data and qualitative data such like observation, intensive interview from expert and relative person. We also use the academicals manner to conclude and to represent the result by descriptive conclusion. The result is following.

Mate selection both tribes are mostly depended on their satisfaction. Especially their mate has to be good person, not to involve in any allurement which can ruin because they believe that they can make themselves constantly after the marriage. Akha doesn’t like to choose their mate such like the youngest child of the family and unlikely chose their mate whom is the same family or different tribe. Lanna Buddhists only the high-class society, their parents often involve in their mate selection’s decision. For flirting both tribes usually uses the music instrument for communication and also uses the cell phone. The flirting is prohibited in house for Mae Jun Tai Akha because they believe that their ancestor soul will punish them consequently they have specific place for flirting that is community’s yard. Lanna Buddhists often use their bride house and their temple during the fair. And they are no infringing because it is wrong for their grandparents’ soul. For making marriage proposal, Mae Jun Tai Akha will compose only their friends or their male cousin. On the marriage proposal day, The groom’s side will give white liqueur to their bride’s father but Lanna Buddhists the person who do the job on purpose doesn’t matter whatever male or female but needs to be creditable person because it can be accepted from the bride’s side. For Lanna Buddhists , when the marriage proposal is done, they will have the “soul-left” ritual as the acceptable engagement. Before the marriage , Lanna Buddhists have no bridal house because they are afraid of mystery that can break apart the spouse so they can’t get married.

For the engagement belief, Akha doesn’t have any engagement but Lanna Buddhists have. On engaged day, Lanna Buddhists will have “acceptation from their grandparents” for protection on the ceremony and blessing for the spouse. For the wedding time, Mae Jun Tai Akha can get married every month but they need to check on the bride’s birthday and groom’s birthday and also look back to their recent date of their both family relative. Lanna Buddhists will regulate the date which is even number and also have to be “Appropriate day” (the day that is good for doing ceremony of Thai horoscope) and commonly depend on number “9”.

The ritual complements, Mae Jan Tai Akha have both procedure and prohibition. The prohibitions are meat and vegetable which rise up in the forest because it is followed by the bad soul. The procedure is burned banana pepper because banana can spire or reproduce. They also use the black female chicken as the symbol of bride and also use the black male pig as the symbol of groom. So they have horoscope by looking at the attached white line on the pig. For Lanna Buddhists, they pay attention to “Bai Sri Tray with pedestal” (It is the ritual. Thai and Laos cultures believe that we have mascot. Mascot can protect us and follow us everywhere. This ritual will take our mascot nearer to us and can support our spirit more bravely, more conscious and less careless.) That is the important complement for the spouse and also believes that holy water can expel the badness. For the ceremonies’ participant, Mae Jun Tai Akha doesn’t mater how many participants are there but Lanna Buddhists can have only one participant in the village.

For the ritual step\, Mae Jan Tai Akha has 3 days for wedding day at groom’s house. The cost will be charged by the groom’s side. The prohibitions are 1.No bride’s cousins allow in the ceremony because they believe that spouse’s kid can be mute or disability. 2. The spouse can’t take a bath during all 3 days ceremony because they believe that bad ghost is under the water and can have something badly. For Lanna Buddhists have only a day for wedding day and there is no prohibition.

The belief after wedding, both tribes also believe in “ancestor soul”. For Mae Jan Tai Akha, after they get married the bride will move to live with groom’s family but Lanna Buddhists, the groom will move to live with bride’s family.
